1-Textile Art with Pizzazz!

2-Think “outside” the Take Out Box

Textile Art with Pizzazz!

Six Lessons, $65

In this class you will learn several important basic art elements that will enable you to elevate your skills and knowledge; you will learn to create art quilts that will stand out from the rest. Your art work will have pizzazz!

This workshop is intended for students who:

  • Are interested in stretching their abilities
  • Are interested in learning how to think and work “out side of the box” and are not quite sure how to do that
  • Have been making art quilts and would like to expand their skills
  • Are interested in broadening their knowledge of color and value
  • Are prepared to focus and work diligently to complete the assignments
  • Want to develop their personal style (By the way: You do have a style you just may not be aware of it.)
  • Are ready to have some fun and create art with pizzazz!

Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and do some serious study. The first two lessons are devoted to color, value and perspective and have a number of exercises that are done with paper. I have included the element of temperature this element is not often included. This element is extremely valuable to understand when utilizing color and value.

The exercises will build a foundation so that you can proceed to the remaining four lessons. Once you understand these two major art elements you will feel more confident and prepared to use the pattern provided and start creating your very own dynamic art quilt with pizzazz!

I designed the Flora Rosa pattern specifically for this class. It is a single flower nestled in a cluster of leaves set in an intimate setting with shallow depth. It is unassuming at first sight. You will be amazed with the possibilities that can be developed within the simplicity. In addition, the pattern is open for personal interpretation. I encourage originality when you feel inclined.

I love spontaneity and encourage it too however; one can only be spontaneous when the basics are understood and applied.

You will realize how much you already know and how to apply it in a creative way.

Techniques Covered

  • Foundation appliqué
  • Fabric collage
  • Quilting as surface design
  • Embellishment
  • Finishing techniques

You should be confident with free motion quilting and quilting in general.

I believe critiques are essential to understanding how our art can be improved. I provide honest (kind) feedback however; critiques are optional.

Clarify: The word “critique” does NOT mean “criticism”. On the contrary; it means to reveal observations. Art is personal and giving an online critique is challenging. Giving and receiving comments on line is a delicate matter. I am willing to give them at your request; they are optional! Critiques are given with kindness and in a professional manner.

My goal in the class is to encourage you to reach out and stretch yourself. This sometimes takes a bit of gentle “nudging”. As long as you know where I am coming from and want to grow, then we should both have a positive experience and most of all, some fun!

Now, would you like to step out of the box for a while? This class is a safe way to do that. I guarantee that there is no danger. The only danger is to hold back and not realize your potential.

The imaginary door is open, come on in!

You will receive the supply list for this class after you sign up.

Think “Outside” the Take out Box

Mixed Media

Four Lessons, $45

Join me for light hearted and interesting class where you will learn to create a unique version of the Chinese “take out box”.

The Take out Box is amazingly simple. It is an “x” that folds up and holds together at two points and the top interlocks. I will provide the pattern and instructions and you provide the originality and you will create your very own one of a kind Take out Box.

The box will be made out of “cotton/parchment”. This is made by hand using layers of fabric and a variety of bits of paper that are bonded together and painted to make a wonderful layered (and sturdy) base to fold and play with. The inside of the box is lined with a fabric

In keeping with a food theme: The box will be embellished on the outside with fish shapes. The fish are also hand made with a second layering process I call “tulle trap”. A variety of embellishments are combined and sandwiched between painted interfacing and tulle and then used as the source for shapes that are used as embellishments. Of course, you may also choose your own theme for the outside.

We will also create several theme associated “objets de art”. After all, a Take out Box is a container and should have contents, right? I prefer to keep the actual contents a secret and reveal this in the last lesson. Believe me, you will love it!

The box will be finished with a custom made handle of wire, beads, old costume jewelry and/or buttons.

All stitching is done by machine except for hand embellishments.

You need to be comfortable with free motion stitching and have a sewing machine that does zigzag.

This box makes a great gift. The paper/fabric is a versatile surface and has multiple applications; this is only one way to use it.

I look forward to thinking “outside” the “Take out Box” with you.
